A comprehensive child development program for children ages 0 – 5 years of age, and a resource center to address the needs of their family.

Cheryl Howard who is a native of Columbia, MO has been the Executive Director of Nora Stewart Early Learning Center since October 2006. She holds a Masters of Education in Counseling from Stephens College. She oversees the main mission of Nora Stewart Early Learning Center to provide education for children 6 weeks to age 8 years in a safe educational and nurturing environment. Her goal is to make sure every child who attends Nora Stewart Early Learning Center is to prepare to enter kindergarten.

Is from Columbia; a true Kewpie.  She has a BA from Stephens and a MA from University of Missouri.  She just recently retired from a 38-year career in Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice. She is now serving as a case manager along with life-long friend, Fontella Henry at the Nora Stewart Family Resource Center.

Becky lives in Boone County with her husband and their two dogs.  She has 2 grown children and 6 grandchildren.

Fontella Ford-Henry

Fontella Henry is a St. Louis native.  She moved to Columbia, Mo is 1981.  Fontella retired as Sergeant from the Columbia Police Department after serving 20 years with the department.  She also worked as a Student Advocate for the Columbia Public Schools and an Investigation Supervisor for the Office of the Inspector General.  Fontella is so excited to work as Caseworker for the Nora Stewart Resource Center.

Our Goals

-To provide safe and developmentally enriching caregiving which promotes the physical, cognitive, social and emotional development of infants – preschoolers and prepares them for future growth and development.

-To educate and strengthen parents in their role as primary caregivers and teachers of their children.

-To support families in meeting personal goals across a wide variety of domains.

-To inform our families about the resources and environments available that provide a comprehensive, integrated array of services and support for families.

Our Methods

-Conducting monthly visits with each child’s family, teachers and other vested individuals to build positive relationships and continuity and encourage parent involvement.

-Providing inclusion for children with disabilities, cultural differences and language barriers.

-Providing assistance transitioning into the public school system.

-Building strong alliances within the community.

-Tracking public school students who have attended Nora Stewart ELC.

-Following up with family members to ensure that identified needs are met.

-Collecting data and conducting assessments for future direction.

-Implementing a monthly Family Night Activity.
